stories of the sunset coast

explore the sunset coast through the stories that shape it

Stories of the Sunset Coast invites you to see Perth’s northern coastline a little differently, through the connections between people, land and nature that continue to define our region.

This experience is designed for curious explorers, locals and visitors alike, who enjoy understanding more about the places they visit. Whether you’re walking a trail such as Lake Joondalup Circuit or Lake Goollelal, visiting the Joondalup Contemporary Art Gallery or spending time at AQWA- The Aquarium of Western Australia and Hillary’s Boat Harbour, there’s always another layer to discover.

three ways to explore

Wherever you begin, each location connects to one or more of three storytelling lenses, these layers reveal why each place matters, what makes it distinctive, and how it fits into the wider Sunset Coast.

  • People & Connections | Discover stories of Whadjuk Noongar Country, local heritage and the communities that have shaped life over generations.
  • Land & Time | Uncover the ancient landscapes beneath your feet, from wind‑formed limestone to shifting dune systems that continue to shape the coastline today.
  • Nature & Life | Experience the ecosystems that thrive here, from coastal bushland and wetlands to reefs and marine habitats.

people & connections

In the heart of Joondalup, this contemporary gallery brings people together through art, ideas and shared experience. As the city’s first dedicated space of its kind, it reflects a growing cultural identity, with regularly changing exhibitions that invite visitors to encounter new perspectives and creative voices.

Located within the Joondalup city centre, a place of layered histories and modern life places it close to a landscape shaped by long histories, urban development and the nearby wetlands and coastline. Many works echo these surroundings through light, texture and movement. Visitors can expect an approachable space to slow down, look closely and connect whether dropping in briefly or spending time exploring each exhibition.

nature & life

Ride the Yalbunullup Mountain Bike Trails, a 7km network weaving through Yellagonga Regional Park. The well‑graded tracks suit beginner and intermediate riders, families and casual cyclists, with gentle terrain, bushland scenery and opening views across Lake Joondalup. A pavilion, toilets, parking and interpretive signage make it an easy, welcoming place to spend a few hours outdoors.

The trails sit on Whadjuk Noongar Country and are named in consultation with Traditional Owners. Yalbunullup reflects enduring cultural connections to this landscape and to Yellagonga, leader of the Mooro people, who moved through this area for shelter, travel and seasonal living within the wetlands and woodlands that define the park today.
